“…Around”: Admirable Resolve

There are some who cringe at the thought of film school, believing that real filmmaking and storytelling can’t be taught in a classroom, only through experience. Some of these people claim they’d rather make their own movies and live on the streets, far away from the cookie-cutter safety of film school.

“The Hangover”: Dude, Where’s My Bro?

Each summer, a comedy or two come along hoping to carve for themselves a place among the upper echelon of modern comedies, the ones that last, that get quoted, that become a part of popular culture. Anchorman, Zoolander, Napoleon Dynamite, Superbad—these films forcefully grabbed us by the arm, stick a needle in, and injected themselves into our bloodstream.

The “X-Files” Virgin

This morning, I realized that the summer movie season really is upon us. With Up and Drag Me to Hell opening this week, following Terminator Salvation of last week, it hit me:

The Legend of “Versus”

Maybe it was the fact that it was 3:00 a.m. and we were all wide awake, but I’ll tell you, I’ve never been in a room with more contagious laughter than that one. For two hours, we nuked cups of ramen in that beaten blue and silver microwave and dished out high-fives like hot cakes. My favorite night in that dorm, and it didn’t require a drop of alcohol.

“The Dungeon Masters”: Just Like You and Me

A glove fits tightly onto a hand. Buttons securely hold the vest together. A cloak is draped over broad shoulders, hanging all the way down to a pair of boots. A sword is tucked safely into a belt. A wide shot reveals not a superhero, not a ranger, but a middle-aged overweight man named Scott, standing in a hotel room.

“Angel of Death” Postmortem

Regarding the made-for-web series, Angel of Death:

The web series concluded its 10-episode run today, so I chose to watch every episode as one entire whole, which to some may seem to go against the point of a web series. But I say it’s about the same as watching an entire season of 24 in one sitting; it’s not for everybody, but it delivers a unique experience.

“Watchmen” Devils On My Shoulders

In honor of Watchmen Week at Forces of Geek, I debate watching the new film before reading that classic graphic novel:

I’m the kind of guy that likes to do things in order. I start watching TV shows from the pilot episode—no skipping. I listen to a band’s albums in chronological order. I even listen to informative podcasts from the very beginning.

Selling Dollhouses

Over at Forces of Geek, I take a look at the expectations for Joss Whedon’s latest TV effort:

For many Buffy, Angel, and Firefly fans, it’s the best of times and the worst of times. Dollhouse premieres tonight on FOX, marking Joss Whedon’s much-awaited return to television.
