Who Says You Can’t Learn Anything From Toys?

It’s easy to dismiss Toy Story as a comparatively shallow Pixar film. A simple story of friendship pushed along by a lot of colorful action, the movie’s virtues seem to pale in comparison to the complexities and subtle implications of Pixar’s latter films—The Incredibles, Ratatouille, WALL•E.

The Legend of “Versus”

Maybe it was the fact that it was 3:00 a.m. and we were all wide awake, but I’ll tell you, I’ve never been in a room with more contagious laughter than that one. For two hours, we nuked cups of ramen in that beaten blue and silver microwave and dished out high-fives like hot cakes. My favorite night in that dorm, and it didn’t require a drop of alcohol.

I started watching Seinfeld after it had finished its run on TV; I taped reruns off of NBC, CBS, and any other channel that chose to air it. This all happened during high school, and I became so obsessed with the show that I began to recite scenes and entire episodes to people; everyone knew I loved Seinfeld (and loathed Friends).

The Personal Touch

There aren’t a lot of personal comedies being made anymore. And I didn’t really notice that. I love those movies. But I guess that era of movies like Manhattan and Annie Hall and things like that has past. Because I’ve been trying to think of what are the personal comedies of the last 10-15 years? And there’s not too many of them. I loved Welcome To The Dollhouse.

A Familiar Face

I sat in line for the 8:15 IMAX showing of the latest Harry Potter film. My group was second in line, so I passed the time by reading some of the seventh book. As people continued to line up behind us, I saw a familiar face—or at least I thought I did. Was that really her? It sure looked like it. I tried to sneak peeks down the line without being too obvious.
